NEW DELHI: The Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, has asked Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit why she has not ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the power privatisation controversy if the charges on the issue were really “politically motivated” as claimed by her. In a statement, Prof. Mukhi dismissed the assertion of the Chief Minister that the allegations were moved by political considerations. “Ms. Dikshit has probably forgotten that the allegations of a major scam in the privatisation of the erstwhile Delhi Vidyut Board were not levelled by me. Even the Public Accounts Committee of the Delhi Assembly headed by Congress MLA S. C. Vats had accepted that there was a scam and recommended that the case be investigated by the CBI and the Central vigilance Commission,” he added. Prof. Mukhi said: “Similarly the highest auditing agency, the Comptroller and Auditor General of India, had raised serious questions. The Lok Sabha Standing Committee on Power has also made very strong observations. The Reserve Bank of India had also in its Mid-Term Appraisal Report stated that the method of privatisation of electricity in Delhi was absolutely impracticable.” The BJP leader said taking into consideration all the reports of the various agencies, the Delhi High Court had not only snubbed the Delhi Government, but also directed it to take immediate action on the reports of the CAG and the PAC. The High Court, he said, has also directed the Delhi Government to lay down the Action Taken Report on the floor of the Delhi Assembly before September 2 and to publicise it extensively. In view of all these developments, he wondered why the Chief Minister was still alleging that there was a political conspiracy and was not ordering an impartial probe.
