Mysore constabulary set to go cracking

Shankar Bennur

Mysore police chief has come out with

a plan to solve cases fast

MYSORE: Constables, head constables and assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) of Mysore city police are likely to get some responsible job in crime investigation: to collect and feed police inspectors with inputs for taking investigation to its logical end.

If everything goes as per the plan of city Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao, who took over as city police chief recently and is working on strategies to speed up investigation with new and improved methods making use of the latest technologies, the strengths of the policemen (below the rank of inspector) would be put to test with these personnel getting new responsibilities, which could make the job of the inspector easier and help him in solving cases fast. As a first step, the commissioner has asked the officers to procure footage of several episodes of a popular show on crime investigation broadcast on a private TV channel for screening it to constables, head constables and ASIs to help them understand the methods and strategies adopted in investigating cases. It could be unsolved cases of hit-and-run, murder, homicide etc., which will be shown to the policemen to improve and sharpen their knowledge.

Disclosing this to The Hindu, Mr. Rao, who believes that the policemen should be involved in all investigations, said, as a second step, he had asked the assistant commissioners of police (ACPs) of four police divisions in Mysore to prepare a list of 25 things which the constables, head constables and ASIs “must know”, 15 things which they “should know” and 10 things which is “nice to know”. “Usually, the inspectors depend on sub-inspectors for information while investigating a case. On several occasions, the constables are treated badly and their services are used for other than investigation. If the entire responsibility is with them (inspectors), then they would be overburdened. I feel it is time to empower constables, head constables and ASIs and use their knowledge and experience in the investigation,” he says.

According to Mr. Rao, if a police inspector snubs his subordinates without giving room for opinion, they might lose information from them, which could be valuable for cracking the cases. Therefore, they should encourage information traffic.

sDuring an interaction with police officers from across the State, the Police Commissioner told the officers to improve the quality of cases. For this, knowledge of law, research and a proper line of investigation were essential, he said.
