Workers’ board to expel fake members

Staff Reporter

’25% of the members are not in construction sector’

Refund for those who opt out

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Building and Other Construction Workers’ Welfare Board has decided to expel fake members.

In a statement here on Saturday, board chairman K.V. Jose and secretary G.S. Lathadevi said the board’s present membership was 13 lakh and out of them nearly 25 per cent were not engaged in the construction sector.

This would lead to decimation of the board. The fake members would be expelled after conducting a thorough scrutiny at the lower levels itself.

Those fake members who voluntarily opt out of the Board before August 31 would get complete refund of the amount they remitted so far. They, however, would not be entitled to further benefits. New membership registrations would begin from August 1.

Only genuine constructions workers would be given membership in future, the statement said.

The board had spent Rs.10 crore for disbursing benefits on the pending applications of workers in various districts.

The board also sought the permission of the Government to enhance the quantum of benefits to the workers.

The statement said that the board had decided to start a modern training centre to give expert coaching to construction workers and their children in various areas of construction works.

The centre was being launched to equip construction workers to use the modern facilities available in the sector.

This would in turn address the shortage of expert workers in the construction sector as well as woo the young generation to this labour front.

Initially, three-month long courses would be started in areas like masonry, bar-bending, carpentry and concrete technician, in collaboration with the Kerala Nirmithi Kendram, the statement said.
