‘Fight for visa is next action’
Anil Kumar
BANGALORE: Peter Russo, Mohammed Haneef’s lawyer, on Sunday said that he had accompanied his client to India to ensure that he reaches home safely and to meet his family.
Speaking to The Hindu in the lobby of his hotel, Mr. Russo said the next course of action would be to fight for the restoration of Dr. Haneef’s visa. The case is posted for August 8 in the Federal Court, and Mr. Russo would be
returning to Australia to attend the hearing. The case is to restore Dr. Haneef’s standing as a responsible citizen, the lawyer said.
There were a few options before the legal team, he said, which were yet to be discussed with Dr. Haneef. A defamation suit against the Australian Federal Police and a case against wrongful confinement where they could seek damages, were the two possible lines of action that Dr. Haneef’s legal team might pursue. “Our course of action will be finalised after discussions with Dr. Haneef,” Mr. Russo said. If Dr. Haneef wished to work in other countries, winning the case for visa restoration was important.
