English skills necessary for students to get jobs: VC

Special Correspondent

VELLORE: The need for teaching English communication skills to undergraduate students to make them employable in the present scenario was stressed by the Thiruvalluvar University Vice-Chancellor L. Kannan on Monday.

Inaugurating an Orientation Programme in English (Foundation Course) for college English teachers organised by Cambridge University Press at Thiruvalluvar University campus here on Monday, Dr. Kannan said the new syllabus for English for the students of B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com, framed by the Board of Studies of the Thiruvalluvar University has been designed in such a way that rural students could easily pick up the language.

The Vice-Chancellor said four lakh jobs are available in the field of Information Technology in India. But only 40,000 students in the country are able to get jobs, since a majority of the students are not able to get the jobs due to lack of English communication skills.

I. Elangovan, Lecturer in English (Selection Grade), Voorhees College and chairman of the Board of Studies in English (UG), Thiruvalluvar University, said the new syllabus for part-II English prescribed 40 marks for language skills and 60 marks for the regular question and answer type questions. “We have been able to do some justice to English language teaching in the new syllabus”, he said.

V. Devanath, Branch Manager, Cambridge University Press, Chennai spoke.
