Sorting the rubbish
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: In an obscure corner of Lalbagh at an abandoned school, a group of people are working hard, unknown to the joggers and visitors who throng the city’s largest park. They sift through piles of garbage that overflows from large sacks.
This dedicated group from the Horticulture Department is part of a campaign initiated three weeks ago by Sahaas, a non-governmental organisation that works on waste management. The Waste Management Sorting Station, a joint initiative of Saahas and the department, was inaugurated on Saturday with the hope that it would make a small difference in a city which produces over 3,000 tonnes of waste every day.
“Lalbagh, being the largest and one of the most visited parks in our city, also accumulates the highest amounts of rubbish,” said Wilma Rodrigues, co-ordinator, Saahas.
Once the waste is sorted — the paper from plastic, and plastic from glass — Saahas transports the segregated materials to local scrap vendors. Ms. Rodriguesis optimistic about the new initiative.
“We are into our third week, and the programme is picking up pace ,” she said.
