Expedite 18th canal scheme in Theni district: farmers
Staff Reporter
REMINDER: Farmers taking out a rally in Theni on Monday.
THENI: Over 350 farmers took out a protest rally here on Monday demanding that the government should expedite 18th canal scheme that was conceived in 1999.
The rally started near the Theni bus stand and reached the Collectorate after passing through the Theni-Cumbum and Madurai-Theni main roads. A team of farmers’ representatives met the District Revenue Officer Thasanathan and handed over a petition to them.
They condemned the “lethargic” attitude of the Government.
In a petition, representatives of farmers associations expressed concern over the inordinate delay in implementation of the scheme.
The officials had announced that the scheme would be completed and water released in 2003. Four Chief Ministers, five Collectors and five Chief Engineers had come and gone.
But the scheme was not completed.
Even as the scheme was planned to complete in three reaches, 80 per cent of work had been completed in the first reach.
In the second reach, only 30 per cent of work was over and third phase reach 60 per cent work finished. But the construction of a check dam at head works did not commence.
Over 50 trees could be felled for construction of the check dam. But not even the tender was floated for this work till date, the farmers pointed out.
“There was some progress in the project during the previous Government. But it was completely paralysed now. But the Chief Minister had announced in the Assembly that water would be released from the dam in June 2008. How would they (officials) complete the project before June 2008?” farmers asked.
Even as Collector had convened seven review meetings, no progress was shown till date, they alleged.
If they completed the work in time, 45 tanks at Thevaram, Kombai, Dombicherry and nearby villages would be filled by now, they said.
