Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Monday confirmed the interim bail granted to former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh in April in connection with the multi-crore Ludhiana City Centre (LCC) scam. Observing that the prosecution had failed to establish that Capt. Singh was required for interrogation in the case, Justice Ranjit Singh Randhawa in his 48-page order confirmed the court order of April 5 in which the former Chief Minister was granted interim bail till Monday. The bail had been confirmed till the prosecution filed a chargesheet in this case before the court. Mr. Justice Randhawa also directed the prosecution to give at least ten days notice to MP Parneet Kaur, who is also wife of the former Chief Minister, if in case she was required for interrogation in this case. Even as Parneet Kaur, a Congress MP from Patiala, was not an accused in this case, she had moved the court in April seeking anticipatory bail as she apprehended her arrest in the case. Following the High Court order in April, the Punjab Government had moved the Supreme Court seeking quashing of the court’s verdict. However, the apex court directed the State Government to move the high court. On the objection raised by the prosecution, Mr. Justice Randhawa said the Supreme Court had observed in the Adri Dharam Dass judgement that there was no limitation in the grant of bail to the accused.
Both Amarinder Singh and his wife were not present in the court. While the inquiry into the scam was ordered by the previous Amarinder Singh government, case against the former Chief Minister and others was registered at Ludhiana Vigilance Bureau after Parkash Singh Badal assumed charge. -- PTI
