Drive against collection of capitation fee and excess tuition fee
Chennai: All self-financing engineering colleges in the State are now under Government scanner with the Directorate of Technical Education intensifying its drive against the collection of capitation fee and tuition fee in excess of what has been prescribed. On Monday, DOTE officials conducted surprise checks in 142 colleges and released a list of institutions that were found to be collecting excess tuition fee. “We have divided colleges into seven zones and formed 81 teams, headed by principals of government engineering colleges to inspect these institutions. Suo motu checks were held and followed up with cross-checking with students who have been allotted seats in these institutions through Anna University’s counselling,” Higher Education Minister K. Ponmudy, told reporters. This is the first time in the State’s history that such check are being conducted by the Government. DOTE officials found evidence of 14 colleges violating the prescribed fee structure. The colleges are Prathyusha Engineering College, Tiruvallur; Sri Ram Engineering College, Veppampattu; Vel Sri Rangarajan Sakunthala College of Multimedia, Vel Tech Engineering College and Vel Sri Rangarajan Sakunthala Hitech Engineering College (all three in Avadi, Chennai); Panimalar Engineering College, Chennai; Rajalakshmi Engineering College, Sriperumbudur; Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College, Chennai; Shree Motilal Kanhaiyalal Fomra Institute of Technology, Kancheepuram; B.A. Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering College, Vandalur; Dhanalakshmi College of Engineering, Chennai; Sri Sairam Engineering College, Chennai; Jayam Collge of Engineering and Technology, Dharmapuri and Adhiyaman College of Engineering, Hosur. “The State Government will initiate criminal action against these colleges and write to the All India Council for Technical Education to take action too,” Mr. Ponmudy said. The surprise checks were in continuance of checks conducted last week at St. Joseph’s Engineering College, Chennai, Sri Venkateswara College of Engineering, Sriperumbudur, and King’s Institute of Technology, Namakkal. In the case of the Sriperumbudur college, it was found that a donation of Rs. 5 lakh was paid by a student through demand draft to Spic Educational Trust. DOTE officials found that the trust was an unregistered entity and traced its bank account, which was later linked to the college. “We will initiate legal action against the college and also ask AICTE to cancel recognition from next year,” Mr. Ponmudy said.
