A total of 80 children from in and around Kancheepuram, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts were screened at the camp held under the aegis of the “save-a-child’s-heart” programme of Apollo Hospitals and Kancheepuram HOST Lions Club, Kancheepuram. A majority of children who were brought to the camp, inaugurated by E. Bakthavachalu, Judicial Magistrate-I, Kancheepuram, suffered from hole in the heart and were in the 8-9 age group.
Parents of children identified for surgery were advised to bring their wards to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai on the date to be informed by the hospital authorities, along with birth certificate, identity certificate (ration card), family income certificate and medical records. Surgeries would be performed free of cost or at subsidised charges in Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, said Karthik Rajagopal, general manager of the hospital.
K. Jayanthi, senior cardiologist, and Neville Solomon, consultant paediatric cardio thoracic surgeon, inspected the children. Echocardiogram test was conducted on 65 children including three children who required re-surgery, said G. Sakthivelu, coordinator, Apollo Information Centre, Kancheepuram.
