NEW DELHI: Even as the culling of poultry birds is underway around the Chinmeirong village near Imphal in Manipur, the Centre has put on high alert the States of Mizoram and Nagaland that share borders with Myanmar. The State Governments have been advised to keep a vigil on illegal smuggling of poultry from Myanmar, where too bird flu has been notified. Following the notification of the outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza in Manipur, 1,37,944 birds have been culled so far. This comprises 58,615 chicken and ducks culled on July 29 and 79,329 birds culled from July 25 to 28. Over 1.5 poultry birds are slated to be stamped out within a radius of 10 km. The Rapid Response Teams had also destroyed 28,389 eggs till July 29. Of the 11,615 kg poultry feed that has been destroyed, 5,773 kg were destroyed on July 29. Cleaning and disinfection of the State Government poultry farms at Mantripukhri and Porompat near Imphal was in progress on Monday. Surveillance within a radius of 5-10 km from the infected village has been intensified. There are 79 villages (41 in East Imphal and 38 in West Imphal) in this area that are under surveillance. There is, however, no report of any abnormal mortality in this region.
