Utkala Sammilini holds demonstration

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: Members of the ‘Utkal Sammilani’ demonstrated in front of the labour office in the city on Monday demanding sign boards of government and non-government units to be written in Oriya as per the instructions of the State Government.

Utkal Sammilani had played a pivotal role in the formation of modern Orissa state on linguistic basis. President of its Ganjam unit Arjun Sahu said since 2000 the State Government has ordered Oriya to be given priority in the sign boards of government offices as well as business establishments. Although seven years have passed since this order was made it is yet to be implemented in the State.

The members of the organisation blamed the State Labour Department for not implementing the orders of the State Government strictly in the State. It may be noted that on November 11, 2000 the labour and employment department issued the order to display the names and addresses of establishments in Oriya.

Mr Sahu said the labour department was not taking any action against the violators of this order although its violation can lead to punishment. The Sammilani members also handed over a memorandum at the labour office, which was addressed, to the Chief Minister demanding all signboards to have Oriya language used prominently in Orissa.
