Bangalore: Shobha Karandlaje and ‘Mukhyamantri’ Chandru of the Bharatiya Janata Party put Leader of the House D.H. Shankaramurthy and Minister for Medical Education V.S. Acharya (both BJP) in an awkward position during question hour in the Legislative Council on Monday. Reading out a set of questions submitted by Ms. Karandlaje, Dr. Acharya told Chairman B.K. Chandrashekar that considering the nature of the questions he would need at least two weeks to come up with the answers. Ms. Karandlaje had asked the Government for the number of Kannadiga students studying in various medical colleges in the State and the number of doctors from the State who had gone abroad for higher studies in the past three years. Disappointed by Dr. Acharya’s reply, Ms. Karandlaje said it was a shame that the Government could not provide answers to basic questions. Stung by the comment, Mr. Shankaramurthy retorted that no one could provide proper answers to the member’s questions as there were many issues involved. Prof. Chandrashekar observed that it should be possible to find answers to the questions. The Government should efforts to so instead of pleading helplessness. Walkout
Mr. Chandru staged a walkout protesting against the reply given by Dr. Acharya on initiating measures to check what the member termed irregularities at the Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology. He refuted the Minister’s stand that there were no irregularities at the institute.
