NEW DELHI: Doctors belonging to the reserved category at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences who are on strike in protest against alleged discrimination during the recent selection of senior residents have decided to continue with their agitation that entered its 12th day on Monday. The protesting doctors who met Union Health Secretary Naresh Dayal this past week have accused Institute Director P. Venugopal of “not submitting all information pertaining to the selection of residents to the high-power committee set up by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry”. “Though we were assured by Dr. Venugopal that he would submit all the relevant papers to the committee, we understand that it has not been done so far. Mr. Dayal in his meeting with the members of Progressive Medicos and Scientists Forum assured us of expediting the enquiry but we are yet to see a positive sign from his office, so we are now seriously looking at stepping up our protest,” said Dr. Abhijeet R of AIIMS. Reiterating their charter of demands, the doctors on strike have demanded due implementation of reservation, a written apology for physical assault and “objectivisation” of the selection procedure. “We have also decided to send a delegation to Chairman, National SC/ST Commission to request him to intervene immediately and thank him for vindicating our stand of AIIMS reservation policy being un-Constitutional,” added Dr. Abhijeet. Meanwhile, following the alleged suicide this past week by a senior resident, Dr. Sunil Kumar, the AIIMS Director has set up a committee to look into the tragedy. The enquiry report is expected to be tabled on Tuesday.
