NEW DELHI: The widow of a 25-year-old young man, who died in Tihar Central Jail here last month, has moved the Delhi High Court on Monday seeking a compensation of Rs. 20 lakh, submitting that her husband had died due to negligence on the part of the jail authorities. The petitioner, Saroj Rani, submitted that the post-mortem conducted by a medical board had said that it was homicide, not a natural death. Since he was the sole bread-earner of the family, the Court should direct the Delhi Government and the jail authorities to pay a compensation of Rs. 20 lakh to her, she pleaded. On the basis of the post-mortem report, a metropolitan magistrate here had directed the Hari Nagar police to register a murder case. The police had then registered the case, the petitioner submitted. She further submitted that she has two children to take care of. The inmate, Vinod, had died on June 12 this year due to injuries inflicted on him, two days after he was lodged in the prison, the widow submitted. She also questioned the legality of the arrest of her husband. Justice B.D. Ahmed later issued notices to the State Government and the Director-General (Prisons) seeking their reply to the petition. He directed the respondents to file their replies by October 12.
