Legal Metrology short-staffed: Tejdeep

Staff Reporter

About Rs. 3 crore sought for strengthening infrastructure

HYDERABAD: The Legal Metrology Department has sought allocation of Rs. 2.92 crore for strengthening its mobile testing laboratories, buying electronic weighing machines and conducting consumer awareness programmes throughout the State.

The Department Controller Tejdeep Kaur Menon told Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food, Civil Supplies and Legal Metrology Kasu Venkata Krishna Reddy on Monday that the present staff was inadequate to cope with the widening role of her department and stressed the need for increased manpower.

During the Minister’s visit, she also explained about a proposal for new buildings to be built within the department’s premises and the space to be shared with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Consumer Affairs Department. The construction cost would be shared proportionately by all the partners and the details were being worked out with the Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) and the Roads and Buildings Department. In a detailed presentation to the Minister, she explained about the shift of focus from retailers to the manufacturers in recent times.

As part of the new strategy, simultaneous raids were being conducted throughout the State and with unified control and command structure there is an efficient exchange of information regarding multinational and transactional companies.

Mr. Reddy assured to take up the proposals submitted to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and the Finance Ministry for taking a positive action.
