STRESS ON UNITY: CPI (M) Central Committee member Mohammed Salim (left) having a word with senior advocate Habibulla Basha at a meeting organised by the party in Chennai on Monday. S. Sathik, former Vice-Chancellor, Madras University, is in the picture.
CHENNAI: Speakers at a special meeting convened here by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday to press for the implementation of the Sachar Committee’s recommendations, called for the coming together of the minorities and the secular forces to “defeat the designs of the communal forces.” Inaugurating the convention, CPI(M) Central Committee member Mohammad Salim said the Sachar Committee’s recommendations had gave the minorities, especially the Muslims, an opportunity to come out of the cocoon and join hands with the Left, democratic and secular parties in their struggle for achieving their demands. He appealed to them to evolve both short-term and long-term strategies for their development in the socio-economic, educational and political spheres. Sangh Parivar flayed
Mr. Salim criticised the Sangh Parivar for attempting to create “communal polarisation” country dubbing the affirmative action to promote the welfare of the Muslims “appeasement.” The CPI (M) would continue to demand that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government come out with a plan for implementing the Sachar Committee’s recommendations, he said. He appealed to the minorities to strive for building a bridge with other deprived sections and working people. This was essential against the backdrop of vested interests trying to drive a wedge between the progressive forces and religious minorities by invoking religious beliefs. CPI (M) State secretary N.Varadarajan said the party would urge the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, a constituent of the UPA Government, to take up with the Centre the issue of implementation of the Sachar Committee’s recommendations. It would also ask the State Government to implement certain aspects of the recommendations which fell under its purview. The campaign to highlight these demands would be conducted in nook and corner of the State. Senior advocate Habibulla Basha appealed to the democratic forces to work together to create an atmosphere of cordiality and friendship among all communities. Former Vice-Chancellor of the Madras University S. Sathik appealed to the well-to-do Muslims to come to the rescue of the deprived sections. “Help women”
CPI(M) Central Committee member U. Vasuki called for government support to Muslim women who were engaged in cottage industries such as beedi rolling and incense stick making. Moving the resolutions, CPI (M) State Secretariat member D. Lakshmanan sought immediate steps to implement the Sachar Committee’s recommendations, create a sub-plan for Muslims, provide education on the basis of general syllabus at Madarasas, appoint more Muslims in the State police force and give representation to women in Wakf Boards.
