HYDERABAD: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Monday night reviewed with Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy and senior State Government officials, the situation arising out of Saturday’s police firing at Mudigonda in Khammam district where six activists of Left parties were killed. Dr Singh drove straight from the airport to Raj Bhavan around 10 p.m. and immediately held a meeting at which Home Minister K. Jana Reddy and police top brass were also present. The Chief Minister briefed him about the events leading to the police firing and the measures his Government had taken to bring the situation under control. A statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office later said that Dr Singh expressed concern for the welfare of those injured and appealed to all sections to maintain peace. He enquired from the Chief Minister about the condition of the injured and the welfare of the families of those killed in the firing. During the 30-minute-long meeting, Dr Singh reiterated his Government’s commitment to addressing the needs of the poor and to its policy of distribution of surplus land to the needy. Land struggle
Sources in the Chief Minister’s Office said Dr Reddy informed the Prime Minister about the three-month-old land struggle launched by the CPI(M) and explained how extremist elements had managed to infiltrate into the movement. He presented details of his Government’s initiative for distribution of land to the poor. Earlier, the Prime Minister was welcomed at the airport by the Chief Minister, Union Ministers S. Jaipal Reddy and T. Subbirami Reddy and several State Ministers. The ceremonial reception planned earlier for the visiting dignitary was dropped.
