Applications for welfare scheme benefits should be made available only through department Government to constitute a high-level committee to go into their demands
Puducherry: Members of the Welfare of Physically Challenged Persons Federation took out a rally from Kamban Kalai Arangam in Puducherry in support of their 10-point charter of demands on Tuesday. They also attempted to lay siege to the Social Welfare Department in Kandappa Mudaliar Street. Their demands included 3 per cent quota of reservation for the physically challenged persons in Government jobs. Distribution of tricycles should be on the basis of the eligibility and requirement of physically challenged persons. The applications for the benefits of welfare schemes should be made available only through the Welfare Department . A spokesman of the association said that the members also wanted availability of the free rice scheme without delay. Police were posted in strength at the spot. After holding demonstration in front of the department office, the agitators tried to lay siege to the office, when the police intervened and arrested them. The agitators included a good number of women also. Representatives of visually impaired and physically challenged persons also addressed the agitators. They urged the Government to constitute a high-level committee to go into their demands.
