Seize share autos operating without permits: Collector

Staff Reporter

SALEM: The district administration has directed the transport officials to seize the share autorickshaws, which are operated without proper permits.

Participating at the district road safety committee meeting held here recently, Collector N. Mathivanan instructed the officials to initiate stern action against the owners and drivers of such autos.

Violation of rules

Earlier, committee members pointed out that the administration gave permission to operate only 50 share autos in the district. But more than 500 ordinary autorickshaws were operated as share autos violating the rules, they complained.

The Collector also directed the officials to install sodium vapour lamps at the road stretch between Arabic College and Kuranguchavadi, Pachaikadu village and Sankagiri.

He asked the officials to shift the electricity poles erected in the middle of the road to the edges in Santhiyur area.

Road safety

Mr. Mathivanan instructed the education officials to conduct classes on road safety at least once in a week in all the schools in the district. Concerted efforts should be made to ensure the safety of students crossing the roads near the educational institutions.

He asked the transport and police officials to conduct a study on the possibility of diverting the long distance buses (going via Attur) through the bypass road in order to reduce traffic congestion at the level crossings at Anaimedu and Mulluvadi Gate.

The congestion might increase after the commencement of train service in Salem-Vridachalam section, he pointed out.

Traffic islands

Members discussed on the need to establish new traffic islands at Three Roads junction, Kuranguchavadi and Tirumagal bypass and installation of high-mast lamps near the Collectorate, Seelanaickanpatti junction and at the entrance of New Integrated Bus Stand.

District Revenue Officer M. Rajarathinam and senior officials were present.
