This Day That Age
Mr. C.D. Deshmukh, Chairman of the University Grants Commission, has advised universities in the country to take advantage of the recent developments in the field of public administration and seek the assistance of the Organisation and Methods Division and the Institution of Public Administration established by the Government of India for “the continuous and systematic improvement of their administrative machinery.” Mr. Deshmukh was inaugurating in New Delhi on July 30 a three-day conference on university administration. The conference, the first of its kind in India, is being attended by Vice-Chancellors of 35 Indian universities, Secretaries of State Education Departments and several educationists. Among the special invitees are Dr. C.P. Ramaswami Aiyar, Prof. Humayun Kabir, Dr. Gordon N. Mackenzie, Educational Consultant to the Government of India, Dr. Zakir Hussain, Dr. K.S. Krishnan and Mr. H.N. Kunzru. Dr. K.L. Shrimali, Minister of State in the Union Ministry of Education and Scientific Research, who presided, suggested the holding of an entrance examination for admission to the universities to prevent “indiscriminate” admissions. Merit alone should be the criterion for selection for university education, he added. Dr. A. Lakshmanaswami Mudaliar, Vice-Chancellor of the Madras University, who is the Director of the discussions, said the conference would go a long way to improve matters in regard to university administration.
