dated August 1, 1957: Directive on dowry

The Andhra Pradesh Government have directed that the acceptance of dowry either in cash or in kind by or on behalf of an officer of the State service or his dependents from the parents or other relatives of the bride at the time of marriage should be regarded as a customary gift which the recipient may accept without prior sanction but subject to the provisions of the Government Servants’ Conduct Rules. All such gifts should be reported to the Government or other prescribed authority. They have also directed that if the dowry is given by or on behalf of an officer of the State service, the fact should be reported to the prescribed authority.
