Bangalore: Higher Education Minister D.H. Shankaramurthy on Monday told the Legislative Council that the State Government would try and convince the Centre to set up a Central university in the backward Gulbarga region. Replying to a call attention notice tabled by Shashil Namoshi (BJP), Quazi Arshad Ali (Congress) and others, the Minister said such a step would go a long way in fighting the backwardness of the Hyderabad Karnataka region. No proposal so far
So far the Centre had not said anything about setting up a Central university, and the State had not proposed any region or place for setting up a university. Now the State would take up the matter with the Centre, he said. He pointed out that D.M. Nanjundappa committee on regional imbalances had suggested that a Central university be set up in Gulbarga as the region did not have any research institute or a centre of higher learning. Tumkur University
On the infrastructure problems of Tumkur University, he said the Government had identified 300 acres of land for various buildings of the university. A formal announcement would be made during the convocation of the university in August. He explained that inadequate land was the main problem facing Tumkur University. Though the Government acquired about 275 acres initially, 200 acres had to be returned as it was forest land. It was not possible to house all the university buildings in the remaining 75 acres. Hence, the Government was searching for additional land, he said. Replying to another call attention notice, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Basavaraj S. Horatti said the Government would transfer Mandya Girls’ Pre-University College principal Shantamma who had earlier been suspended from service on the charge of failure to maintain financial records.
