Bangalore: The Bangalore Gayana Samaja is celebrating its 103rd anniversary on August 5, a day which will also mark the beginning of its 39th music conference. Established on August 5, 1905, the samaja has spent the last century in the pursuit of preserving and promoting several classical, performing art forms, including Carnatic and Hindustani music, devotional music, sugama sangeetha, dance in all its forms, musical features, dramas, Gamaka, Yakshagana and Harikatha. Social reform
Credited also for participating in the large-scale social reform movement undertaken by the Indian government post-Independence, the organisation has done its bit to integrate folk and subaltern art forms into its fold, thereby contributing to social reform at the level of culture. The celebrations will feature musical talent from all over the country with Rajeev Taranath, sarod maestro, being instated as the president of the music conference. Performances
The event promises nirvana for the connoisseur of music with performances. The event will include sessions by experts in the field on the compositions of Subbaraya Sastry (by R. K. Srikantan), compositions of Karigiri Rao (M.S. Sheela), Tilanas of Veena Seshana (Mysore V. Subramanya and Rajalakshmi Tirunarayan), Krithi form of trinity (Radha Bhaskar), classicism and creativity in Hindusthani music (Shyamala G. Bhave), Rasa and appreciation of Hindusthani music (Lalitha Ubhayker), Jod ragas and Sankeerna ragas (Rajashekar Mansur), teaching techniques in Hindusthani music (Rajeev Taranath), Vadi and Samvadi swaras in Hindusthani music (Muddu Mohan), mutual influence of Carnatic and Hindusthani ragas (Shakuntala Narasimhan), music management – impresario (Satish Vyas). The event also has ‘evening music concerts’ from August 5 to 12. The event will be inaugurated in the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister, B.S. Yediyurappa; Dr. Rajeev Taranath; the Secretary, Kannada and Culture and Tourism, I.M. Vitalla Murthy; the chairman of Ganjam Nagappa and sons, Ganjam Eshwar; and art critic Mysore V. Subramanya.
