Gandhi and Gurudev in conversation

A play based on the book ‘The Mahatma and the Poet’

THIS FOR ``TALK OF THE TOWN” WITHOUT PICTURE.

As part of the centenary celebrations of the Satyagraha, Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti in association with Prayog, an organisation that promotes theatre, is staging a play, ‘Stay Yet a While’, at its 5 Tees January Marg premises in New Delhi this Wednesday.

Based on the book ‘The Mahatma and the Poet’ by Sabyasachi Bhattacharya, the play besides is about the communications between Gandhi and Tagore. It will also present their thought-provoking articles and statements on issues like civil disobedience and ‘charkha’.

The play will be directed by acclaimed theatre personality M. K. Raina, who has directed over 150 plays across the country in 14 languages and was a part of the parallel cinema movement.

Talking about the play, Raina says: “The play will focus on the correspondence between Gandhiji and Rabindranath Tagore during the Indian freedom struggle. It will highlight their correspondence in English from 1915 to 1941. This documentary type of play will have artistes playing Bapu, Tagore and another person who would interpret their talk.”

The play will be staged in a documentary form, where theatre lovers will witness rare photographs and vintage footage depicting the history of the Indian freedom struggle. The discourse will highlight the fact that though the two great men had serious differences on major political and philosophical issues, yet on a personal level they had respect, love and care for each other.
