Wants Central law on admissions Promises on railway division not kept
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has called upon MPs from the State to protest against the neglect of the State’s needs by the Centre. At a conference of MPs here on Tuesday, the Chief Minister recalled that the Centre had not provided the assistance sought by the State for flood relief. The Centre’s stand was inhuman at a time when the State Government was mobilising contributions from all sections to provide relief. That attitude, he added, should be questioned in Parliament. Mr. Achuthanandan said the Centre should be helping the State in its efforts to ensure social justice and merit-based admissions in self- financing professional colleges. Central legislation was required to check the “traders in education.” Similarly, legislation was needed for agricultural debt relief. He called upon the members to seek steps for changing the norms of the employment guarantee scheme to suit the milieu in the State. Action was also needed to solve the issue of Salem Railway Division. The Minister of State for Railways was trying to form the Salem division through bifurcation of the Palakkad division. This was against the promises given by the Prime Minister and the Railway Minster. Though the Prime Minister had announced that an Indian Institute of Technology would be set up in Kerala, the promise had not yet been kept. Several plants of the Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) were facing closure. He urged that the MPs should seek the cooperation of the Union Ministers in solving the States problems.
