Veliyam Bharghavan
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Communist Party of India (CPI) State secretary Veliyam Bharghavan has said that he will rate the performance of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government “fairly satisfactory so far.” At a meet-the-press programme organised by the Kerala Union of Working Journalists here on Tuesday, he was asked what he had to say about Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan’s comment about “corruption scandals dimming the image of the LDF Government.” “Mr. Achuthanandan could have been talking about the problems in his party. We will not even look in that direction,” Mr. Bharghavan said. He said he had heard of no corruption charge from any side about the affairs of the Government. Several sectors such as agriculture, civil supplies, industries, cooperation and law and order had shown perceptible improvement since the LDF came to power, he said. Mr. Bharghavan said he would have been, however, happier if the Government were to move faster with its initiatives to fulfil the LDF’s election promises. “For instance, there has not been much progress in taking effective steps against those who had indulged in corruption during the time of the previous Government … Cases of gross corruption in the departments of public works and industries are yet to be seriously looked into,” he said. Mr. Bharghavan said the Chief Minister had a valid point when he spoke the other day about the neglect of the Union Government towards Kerala. Asked about the Chief Minister’s threat to launch a satyagraha in front of the Prime Minister’s residence to end this “neglect,” he said strong modes of agitations might become necessary on certain occasions. “I will not say Mr. Achuthanandan should go on a satyagraha. Don’t we have our MPs in New Delhi,” he said, suggesting that he would rather prefer the Kerala MPs adopting such a mode of agitation in New Delhi to end the “neglect.”
