Glanders virus claims 11 more equines

Staff Correspondent

DEHRA DUN: Eleven horses and mules afflicted by the dreaded Glanders virus have been put to sleep and buried by experts in the Golapar forests near Kathgodam in Naini Tal district and the owners of the animals given a cash compensation of Rs.15,000 each, the Minister for Agriculture and Animal Husbandary, Trivendra Singh Rawat, said here on Tuesday.

The Glanders virus is highly contagious within the equine family and can travel from an equine to a human being. It, however, does not travel from a human being to another, say experts. There is no cure or vaccine against the virus till date.

These 11 latest victims were among 21 animals (all from Haldwani area) that tested positive and had been segregated after a random State-wide serum collection done by a team of veterinarians. Ten had died over the past few weeks. All the infected equines were said to have been brought in from Uttar Pradesh. The serum was tested at the National Research Centre for Equines at Hisar in Haryana and the IVRI at Bareilly in UP.
