Auto drivers demand houses, pension

SEEKING HOUSES: Autorickshaw drivers taking out a procession in Shimoga on Tuesday.

SHIMOGA: Autorickshaw drivers held a demonstration here on Tuesday by taking out a procession from the Science Field to the Deputy Commissioner’s office, where they presented a memorandum requesting the district administration to concede their demands.

The Shimoga City Auto Drivers’ Welfare Association had organised the demonstration, which was led by its president M.Palappa and general secretary Nasser Ahmed.

Their demands include earmarking 25 per cent of houses available under the Ambedkar Housing Scheme to the autorickshaw drivers, formulation of an old age pension scheme for autorickshaw drivers above 60 years of age, compensation of Rs.1 lakh to the dependents of autorickshaw drivers who die in accidents and installation of solar signal lights at important circles.
