A day of protests

CPI(M) takes out silent rally

ELURU: It happened to be a day of protests in the city on Tuesday. The TDP launched a relay fast at the Fire Station Centre while the CPI (M) took out a silent protest rally on the police firing at Mudigonda in Khammam district. Besides, the Progressive Democratic Student Union staged a dharna at the Collectorate resenting the alleged move by the Government to wind up a number of junior colleges in the State on the pretext of dwindling student strength.

A novel protest was staged under the aegis of the city unit of the CPI(M), denouncing the Mudigonda firing The protesters tied their mouths with a piece of black cloth as a mark of protest against the police action.

Relay fast

About 30 activists of the TDP led by former Zilla Parishad Chairman K. Jayaraj went on a relay fast in support of their fasting leader Chandrababu Naidu in Hyderabad in protest against non-inclusion of Mudigonda in the itinerary of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. According to reports reaching here, TDP staged similar protests in Bhimavaram, Narsapuram, Tadepalligudem and Undi also.

Classes boycotted

Meanwhile, students of Government Junior College and the other colleges boycotted classes and took out a procession under the banner of the PDSU city unit as a part of the Statewide call, appealing to the State Government to save junior colleges. In a memorandum submitted to the Collector, the PDSU alleged that the Government was planning to wind up some sections and even close some colleges across the State on the ground of dwindling student strength. The student outfit regretted that the move would give a boost to the corporate education and deprive poor students of the right to education.
