Delhi to get a new flyover

NEW DELHI: The foundation stone of a new flyover on National Highway-10 was laid by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at Nangloi here on Tuesday. To be built at an estimated cost of Rs.78 crore, the flyover would be commissioned by April 2009 and cater to over 10,000 passenger cars during the peak hour.

Ms. Dikshit said the transport scenario in Delhi would improve significantly with the commissioning of 27 flyovers or underpasses and 31 foot over-bridges before the start of the Commonwealth Games in 2010.

Apart from this, she said the Delhi Government had also decided to bring fast moving buses, including air-conditioned ones, for city transport.

The Chief Minister also complimented the Public Works Department for providing quality infrastructure in the city. She expressed confidence that the new flyover would ensure a smooth flow of inter-State traffic and reduce commuting time between Delhi and Rohtak.

Incidentally, the 1,075-metre-long flyover would also facilitate village-bound traffic. A Metro railway line would pass above the upcoming flyover which would provide an uninterrupted straight-ahead vehicular movement along NH-10 and reduce traffic congestion through signalised intersection at ground level at the Kirari Mor and Najafgarh Road junction and ensure interrupted movement of straight traffic going towards Mundka.

Ms. Dikshit also announced that construction of around 2,000 low-cost houses for the weaker sections of society, including slum dwellers, would start in August. The houses would be constructed with fast-track technique within six months. She said UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi was being requested to lay the foundation stone of low-cost houses in Bawana.

Delhi Urban Development Minister A. K. Walia said construction of all 27 planned flyovers would start within six months.

Development Minister Raj Kumar Chauhan said ration cards were now being issued to the residents of JJ colonies. While local MP Sajjan Kumar and MLAs Bijender Singh and Jai Kishan were present on the occasion, many other Congress leaders of the area were annoyed at not being invited to the function.
