Plight of the aged

Aging alone: A still from Thaniye.

Thaniye

Thaniye (Alone) is a story of loneliness and deprivation felt by the aged in our society. Babu Thiruvalla paints a visual reality on the screen with his maiden directorial venture. The film has been scripted by Nedumudi Venu and Babu Thiruvalla together.

Georgekutty (Nedumudi Venu), a rich estate owner and widower, stays all alone in a bungalow situated in the idyllic environs of Vandiperiyar in Idukki. His only son is a doctor in the U.S. At times, his son’s mother-in-law Sosamma (KPAC Lalitha) and her son Richie (Asokan) frequent the house. They are a source of irritation to him. They only want his property.

Sosamma brings a home nurse to attend to Georgekutty’s needs. Being authoritative, she annoys him so much that he sends her away. With her exit, a new nurse takes over. Georgekutty addresses her as koche (Lakshmi Gopalaswami). What the old needs is love, care and acceptance in society. Through her ways, she imparts these to Georgekutty. His son arrives, but is too busy to find time for his father. The home nurse consoles him. And now his son wants to convert the house into a tourist resort. Georgekutty feels more alienated. Nedumudi Venu, as Georgekutty, gives a sterling performance. M.J. Radhakrishnan captures in frame through light and shade the reflective mood of Georgekutty, juxtaposed with the frosty nature outside. Mellow music by Isaac Thomas Kottukapally creates the right ambience.

The film has been produced by Friends of Thiruvalla (Doha).
