HYDERABAD: Perturbed over series of fatal accidents involving pedestrians, the Cyberabad police have identified 15 places for construction of foot-over-bridges (FoBs) on the busy roads. Narrow road space, dug-up pavements and unhygienic conditions are making matters worse for pedestrians. Haphazard parking is further compounding the problem. Such is the alarming situation that a schoolboy G. Ranjit Sai died after he was run over by a lorry at Vanasthalipuram on July 19. The accident occurred when Sai was crossing the road along with his cousin. From bad to worse
The scenario has transformed from bad to worse on the main stretch from Godrej junction to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) in Kukatpally. At least three persons in a week meet with accidents while crossing road as the area is encircled by many educational institutions, cinema theatres and shopping malls. Similar is the situation at Uppal, L. B. Nagar crossroads, Erragadda, Chaitanyapuri in Saroornagar etc. A staggering 181 pedestrians were killed in Cyberabad Police Commissionerate limits during first six months of 2007. The month-wise statistics is as follows: January (35), February (23), March (35), April (33), May (26) and June (29). The officials of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) have taken-up the construction of FoB at Kukatpally and entrusted contract to an advertising agency run by Sarsa Devi. But works hit a roadblock with her arrest in connection with the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan scam. “We have identified 15 places and proposals have been already sent to the GHMC along with problems being faced by road users,” Cyberabad Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) P. Muni Swamy said. He further stated at least four such bridges were needed on priority basis from Godrej junction to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Kukatpally following increasing road accidents.
