Sports heroes honoured

V. V. Subrahmanyam

Winning laurels: Outstanding sportsmen of yesteryears honoured.

HYDERABAD: Smile in every mile is the catchy slogan of the 10K Foundation. And, as part of their sincere efforts to bring cheers in the lives of some of those outstanding stars of yesteryears, it made Monday a day to remember by honouring five great sports personalities in a big way.

Eighty-two-year-old Doppula Pandari (member of the famous Hyderabad City Police football team) led the list of awardees which included 1956 Olympian 70-year-old Md Zulfaqaruddin, 64-year-old, nine-time national boxing champion and Arjuna Awardee Dennis Swamy, weightlifting coach N.Appana (who could not make it as he was indisposed) and senior most sports journalist from the State 77-year-old T.N.Pillay.Each of them was honoured with a shawl and a cash award of Rs.50,000. “We believe that the youngsters get inspired by the feats of these stars who faced adversity during their hey days,” said Padmaja Reddy, chairperson of 10K Foundation. “It was a very touching function. And, good that there are people who still remember and appreciate the contribution of people like us to sports,” said T.N.Pillay. The joy of Zulfaqaruddin knew no bounds as he walked across to be honoured. “Honestly, I never thought I would be a member of such an august function,” he remarked. Obviously, Pandari, the seniormost of all the recipients, was awe-struck by the occasion.

“I never ever dreamt of this kind of function in my life,” he said. Sports Minster R.Damodar Reddy lauded the organisers efforts. “We are grateful to you,” was the unanimous expression of the awardees to Gopi Chand as they left the hall with renewed vigour. The foundation also presented scholarships to the young talent on the occasion.
