CHENNAI: The Chennai Apparel Association (CAA) on Tuesday requested the State Government to form an exclusive park for city-based apparel manufacturers in Sriprembudur and provide tax benefits.
CAA president Jagdish Sarda said they would be meeting government officials soon and ask for 100 acres of land. “Though we have an Apparel Park in Irungattukottai that caters to the needs of exporters, this is exclusively for domestic manufacturers.”
The 128.83 acres Irungattukottai Apparel Park is located just behind Hyundai facility. Out of the 91.85 acres of allotable land, only 8 acres is currently available.
The State Government has received application from a manufacturer who has sought 5 acres. The State Government is also coming up with Footwear Park and Footwear Component Parks in the same region that are highly labour intensive and can provide employment to around 5,500 people.
Most apparel and leather exporters from this region have urged the Government not to encourage more Apparel Parks in the neighbourhood as they are facing labour shortage.
“We are dealing with domestic retailers to market our finished products like men, women and children dresses. The depreciation of US dollar has a strong impact on some of our manufacturers, but that is a small portion. Right now, we face labour shortage as most of them prefer to work in IT and ITES firms. This is being ironed out by providing training courses to labourers’ kith and kin,” Mr. Sarda said.
