Agitation before taluk offices on August 16 to press for house sites for the roofless
CHENNAI: The Communist Party of India will strive for greater unity with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and other like-minded parties to launch a powerful agitation demanding house sites for the roofless in the State, State CPI secretary D. Pandian said on Tuesday. Briefing presspersons about the three-day State council meeting of the party, which concluded here on Sunday, he said party activists would stage demonstrations before taluk offices on August 16 in support of the demand. The protest was based on the CPI’s decision to intensify the agitation at the national level, demanding house sites for the roofless and pattas for those who had put up huts on vacant sites belonging to the Government, trusts and private owners, he said. The CPI would evolve its protest plan after ascertaining the Government’s response. The Government, which was keen to acquire land for setting up special economic zones and industries, also had the responsibility of acquiring sites for the roofless. It should also come forward to revive sick industries in the textile and fertilizer sectors, he said. Funds for farm loans
He demanded release of adequate funds to cooperative banks for providing farm loans to take up samba and kuruvai cultivation in the delta districts. Mr. Pandian sought steps to ensure supply of quality seeds to farmers at cheap rates. He urged the DMK Government to remove restrictions on staging protests in certain areas citing Supreme Court orders. To a query, he said the CPI had no intention of posing impediments to development projects or cause embarrassment to Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. The party had held a meeting to felicitate Mr. Karunanidhi for waiving farm loans and reviving the welfare board for farm workers. The CPI’s support to the DMK Government in the State and the United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre would continue, he said.
