BCCI may advertise for post of coach: Shah

Special Correspondent

Chennai: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) might advertise for the post of the Indian team coach, said BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah.

Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Shah said on Tuesday, “the BCCI office bearers will meet in New Delhi on August 10, where the modalities regarding the process for selecting the new coach will be decided.”

The BCCI secretary added, “right now we have Venkatesh Prasad and Robin Singh as the bowling and fielding coaches who are doing a good job.

And the team is winning. We are in no great hurry and will look for the best possible candidate. Personally, I am not in favour of advertising for the post, but we will reach a consensus and the views of the other office bearers will also count.”

Mr. Shah said the final screening would be done by a panel comprising former India captains Sunil Gavaskar, S. Venkatraghavan and Ravi Shastri and a select BCCI committee headed by its president Sharad Pawar.

Non-commital

The BCCI secretary was non-committal about India appointing a new coach before the Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa. The Indian cricket team has been without a coach since Greg Chappell decided not to seek an extension to his contract after the World Cup.

The BCCI offered the post to former South Africa coach Graham Ford, who, eventually, chose not to take up the job.

It is learnt that a few India coaches, Chandrakant Pandit and Vijay Mohanraj among them, have shown interest in the job. Mr. Shah was not willing to name the foreign coaches the BCCI was looking at.
