NEW DELHI: International Master V. Saravanan caused a big surprise in the Dutch Open chess championship when he accounted for Dutch Grandmaster Friso Nijboer to reach 4.5 points after six rounds at Dieren, Holland, on Monday. Deep Sengupta also matched Saravanan’s tally by beating Dutch Woman International Master Marlies Bensdorp. Four players share the lead at five points. In the Biel Masters, Swati Ghate stayed on course for a possible Grandmaster norm after drawing with Croatian GM Ognjen Cvitan in the seventh round. Suvrajit Saha was the other Indian to prove equal to Israel’s GM Maxim Rodshtein. Both Swati and Saha have five points each. The results: Dutch Masters (sixth round): Ikonnikov Vyacheslav (Rus, 5) bt Dibyendu Barua (4); V. Saravanan (4.5) bt Friso Nijboer (Ned, 3.5); Marlies Bensdorp (Ned, 3.5) lost to Deep Sengupta (4.5); G. Robert Hartoch (Ned. 3.5) drew w ith Saptarshi Roy Chowdhury (3.5); N. Srinath (3) lost to Ali Betalzadeh (Ned, 4); Saheli Dhar-Barua (2.5) lost to Stefan Kuipers (Ned, 3.5). Biel Masters (seventh round): Maxim Rodshtein (5) drew with Suvrajit Saha (5); Swati Ghate (5) drew with Ognjen Cvitan (Cro, 5); Klaus Klundt (Ger, 4.5) drew with Deepan Chakkravarthy (4.5); Parimarjan Negi (4.5) bt Arndt Miltner (Ger, 3.5): D.
