Staff Reporter
Thiruvananthapuram: An infectious diseases control cell will be set up in the State by September 15, as a long-term measure to control all infectious diseases, including vector-borne diseases. The cell will function as part of the National Vector-borne Disease Control Programme. A high-level meeting convened by Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy has decided to convene an 18-member State-level cell and a 10-member district-level infectious diseases control cell. Control cells will be set up at the block, municipal and Corporation levels under the district-level cell. Cells will be set up at the grama panchayat-level and the ward-level so that daily surveillance can be coordinated from the grassroots level. The filarial and malaria control units in 10 districts will be integrated with the cells and re-deployed to all 14 districts. The field-level staff would be made more active. The State-level cell will be under a Deputy Director of Health Service while the district-level cell under a Deputy District Medical Officer.
