ARANTHANGI: The Aranthangi Municipality has planned to expand its jurisdiction by merging a few villages in its vicinity, by taking advantage of the programme on delimitation of local bodies currently on in the district.
Presiding over the council’s monthly meeting here on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Aranthangi Municipality, P. Mariappan, said that the district administration had convened a preliminary meeting for the delimitation of the local bodies. The Aranthangi municipality has planned to expand its jurisdiction to a few villages, including Pookudi, Rathinakottai, Alapiranthan and Azhiyanilai.
Maps of these villages were being prepared in support of the proximity to the municipality, and the proposal would be submitted to the district administration for draft recommendation to the Government.
A number of councillors also pleaded for delimitation of the existing wards. V. R. Subramanian (Independent) said that a single street or road in any ward fell under the jurisdiction of at least two wards. It also created a confusion among the members of the public in seeking the assistance of the ward councillors.
The Chairman said that the municipality would get about 10 acres of land in Perumalpatti village for setting up the underground sewage treatment plant. The plant would be set up as part of the underground drainage scheme, to be implemented in the town. L. Muralidharan (BJP) wanted improvement works to be taken up at all the burial grounds in the town.
