Karur forum flays move to “scuttle” formation of Salem railway division

Staff Reporter

“New divisions will help modernise railway set-up in the region”

KARUR: Train travellers from Karur have condemned the “move to scuttle or even delay” formation of the Salem Railway Division. They say that certain forces in Kerala inimical to the development of the region in opposing the creation of the railway division would have to be to dealt with firmly.

Karur District Train Travellers’ Welfare Association president S. Annadurai pointed out that the proposed Salem Division would get 708 km rail from Palghat division and 135 km from Tiruchi division.

If the new division were to come into existence then several ongoing and future development works could be expedited and better facilities for rail users could be sought and got from the administration that would be proximate.

Moreover, creation of a division was nothing new and periodically new zones and divisions were being created. The new divisions would help modernise railway set up in the region and infuse more vigour in its functioning, Mr. Annadurai noted in a release issued here on Monday.

When new divisions came into force in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, nobody protested but only now there was a concerted move to scuttle or even delay formation of the Salem division by vested interests, he added.

Kerala political leaders should understand that revenue generated from any railway division would only go to strengthen the railways and would not directly benefit the State. Then how come Kerala State would be affected?, he wondered.
