PUDUCHERRY: The Thavathiru Sankaradass Swamigal Iyal Isai Nataka Sabha staged “Manonmaniyam,” a play written by Manonmaniyam Sundaram Pillai for the 153rd time here on Sunday. A. Arivunambi, Head of the Department of Tamil at Puducherry University, remarked that a play meant for reading had been converted into a stage play and enacted 153 times. On the occasion, the Sevarathna award was conferred on former Superintendent of Police M. Ramalingam and the Sundaranar award was presented to Tamil scholar Arimathy Thennagan. The Thanthai Periyar award was bestowed on N.Nandhivarman of Dravida Peravai. The Pavendar Award was conferred on Lourdusamy, principal of Amalorpavam School and K. Sivadasan, orthopaedic surgeon, was conferred the Dhanvantri award. Former Vice Chancellor of Madras University Pon. Kothandaraman said this was the first play in Tamil to have been written on the lines of Shakespeare. Pulavar Radha, Sabha president, who acted as Sundaramunivar in the play, and Krishnamurthy, Secretary were present. Sundaram was the son of Perumal Pillai and Madathy Ammal. He mastered famous Tamil works such as ‘Thevaram’ and ‘Tirukural’ in early childhood.
