KOCHI: “In spite of the city facing one of the worst crises in waste management, traffic congestion and pathetic road conditions, I would like to provide creative support for Kochi’s development,” said K.V. Thomas, MLA. Addressing a press meet here on Tuesday, Mr. Thomas said that the Chief Minister had promised to provide all support for the city’s development, since it was the face of Kerala in terms of tourist destination and was witnessing large scale development in various fields. He said that a biogas plant would be set up at General Hospital with the support of Rajagiri School of Social Sciences. Prof. Thomas said he had earmarked Rs.4.82 lakh from the MLA fund to get the system in operation by Onam. Another biogas plant, with a higher capacity to process 700 kg of waste, would be set up near Kaloor at Kathrikadavu. Another project would be in association with Kerala Environmental and Sustainable Development society. The first of the thousand vermicompost plants would be set up in 71st division of the Corporation with support from councillor Sunil Kumar. There were 30 Corporation divisions under the Ernakulam Assembly segment and biogas and vermicompost units would be set up in association with the respective councillors, Prof Thomas added.
