Government had promised to appoint members by July 31 Six names have been short-listed, says Yediyurappa
BANGALORE: The entire Opposition in the Legislative Council staged a walkout on Wednesday to express its displeasure over the inordinate delay in appointment of members to the State’s Permanent Backward Classes’ Commission. Raising the issue during Question Hour, Leader of the Opposition H.K. Patil pointed out that the Government had failed to keep its promise of appointing members to the commission by July 31. Social Welfare Minister Balachandra Jarkiholi said the Government had appointed chairman and a member to the commission. But the Opposition members took exception to it and wondered if that was enough for the commission to execute its responsibilities. Survey
Janata Dal (U) member M.P. Nadagouda alleged that the socio-economic survey of different communities was getting delayed due to failure of the Government to appoint members to the commission. Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa tried to pacify the Opposition members by declaring that the members would be appointed by the commencement of the next legislature session. He said the Government had already short-listed some six names in this regard. Not satisfied with the reply, all the Opposition members staged a walkout. Rehabilitation
Replying to Congress member Siddu Nyamagouda, Revenue Minister Jagadish Shettar assured the House of taking a final decision on rehabilitating people of Kankanavadi village in Jamkhandi taluk which will be submerged when the water level in the Alamatti reservoir touches 520 m. He also said that he would hold discussion with Tourism Department officials to examine the suggestion for converting the village into a centre of eco tourism.
