Getting ready: An auditorium at MIT, Chromepet, in Chennai being spruced up in anticipation of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam’s visit.

TAMBARAM: Students, teachers and researchers at Madras Institute of Technology, Chromepet, are excited at the prospect of interacting with former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who recently returned to Chennai after completing his five-year term.

The Rajam Hall at the MIT is getting spruced up, in anticipation of his visit. No programme has been scheduled for him in the near future and the Department of Aerospace Engineering, where he studied, has not arranged any event.

Nonetheless, the auditorium is getting ready as he might address the MIT staff and students through videoconference, teachers here said.

The former President visited the MIT in February to address an international conference on signal processing and communication. Prior to that, his visit was in early 2002 to deliver an endowment lecture.

President-designate at that time, he crossed the railway tracks when the gates at the level-crossing were down as construction of the MIT bridge was in progress.

Dr. Kalam graduated in aeronautical engineering in 1957 and was in the sixth batch of students to pass out of the MIT that year. Teachers in the Department of Aerospace Engineering said he was in touch with developments in the MIT, as he nurtured a very fond relationship with two of his teachers : K.A.V. Pandalai and S. Narasimhan.

Dr. Kalam was instrumental in establishing the Professor K.A.V. Pandalai Memorial Chair in the department with the support of Aerospace Research and Development Board.

A. Dhanraj, Head of the Department, said the establishment of the Chair helped in bringing research projects.

Dr. Dhanraj said an event involving the President had not been planned for the time being, but all at MIT were looking forward to interact with him at the earliest.

MIT authorities said they were planning only video-conferencing facilities for the moment, considering security arrangements that need to be put in place if Dr. Kalam was to visit the campus.

Students not only of the Department of Aerospace Engineering but also are eager to meet India’s missile man, who, they said, had inspired millions of people across the nation.
