Letters to the Editor
Congratulations to P. Sainath, Rural Affairs Editor of The Hindu, on winning the Ramon Magsaysay award. His eminent insight into rural life and the problems associated with it is remarkable. He is the voice of the masses whose problems would otherwise have been ignored.
Philip Joshua,
Mr. Sainath’s work has been marked, as pointed out by the Board of Trustees of the award foundation, by a passionate commitment “to restore the rural poor to India’s national consciousness.” That he has been able to do it in the celebrity-obsessed Indian media world, and win international acclaim should inspire the younger generation of Indian journalists. The award is another feather in The Hindu’s cap as well for, it has provided consistent and well- deserved support and encouragement to Mr. Sainath in his efforts over the years.
M. Hanumantha Rao,
Mr. Sainath’s series on the agrarian crisis in Vidharbha and the political establishment’s gross indifference brought tears in readers’ eyes. May The Hindu and Mr. Sainath earn many more laurels for their laudable service in highlighting the real issues of rural India.
P. Kanaka Durga,
