Corrections and clarifications

* * A report “Power capacity to go up in NE States” (“Business” page, August 1, 2007) said that the current power generation in Assam is 200 MW as against a demand of 850 MW. A reader felt both figures appeared to be very low. The Kolkata Bureau clarifies that J.P. Meena, Commissioner and Secretary, Department of Power, Government of Assam, confirms that the figures mentioned in the story (and which were attributed to Assam’s Power, Public Enterprises, Industry and Commerce Minister Pradyut Bordoloi) are accurate. He also adds that the gap between the power generated and the demand is met by purchasing power from Central utilities.

* * The sixth paragraph of a report “Hari in joint second spot” (“Sport”, July 27, 2007) said that Bulgaria’s Aleksander Delchev won the title on superior tiebreak score after being tied with Vinay Bhat at eight points [at the Balaguer Open chess tournament, Spain]. A reader wondered who Vinay Bhat was. The Sports Desk clarifies that Vinay Bhat represents the U.S., and hence there was no mention of him in the results column that featured only the Indian players.

* * A report “Sania equals career-best ranking” (“Sport”, July 31, 2007) said that Sania Mirza has played against top-20 players like Tatiana Golovin, Patty Schnyder and Sybille Bammer. Sybille Bammer is ranked 21.

* * A PTI report “Double for Arvind Bhat” (“Sport”, July 31, 2007) said that Kenneth Jonassen of Denmark is World No.4. He is ranked World No. 8. (The report was on the $5,000 New Caledonia Open, an Inter national Badminton Federation satellite event.) The error was in the report.

* * Bob Holland’s batting average is 3.18, and not 3.14 as stated in a Ted Corbett report “Pressure getting to [Ryan] Sidebottom?” (“Sport”, July 29, 2007). Also, Sidebottom had 22 wickets before the start of the second Test, and not 24 as mentioned in the same report.
