Renjith Maheswary.
NEW DELHI: With his 17.19m performance in the Asian championships in Amman, though wind-assisted, Renjith Maheswary has jumped to the 16th position in triple jump in the world rankings released on Tuesday. He was 26th in the previous week. The 19.70m that he reached in winning the shot put gold in Amman has helped Navpreet Singh come into the world rankings after having been out of the list for a few weeks. He is ranked No. 48. With her bronze medal in the Asian meet, woman discus thrower Krishna Poonia has moved up one place from her previous week’s 27. Long jumper Anju George is yet to get back into the world rankings. She now has the minimum six meets required to get into the rankings, the South Asian Games in Colombo in August last year, the inter-State meet in Chennai in November last year, the Doha Asian Games, the Asian Grand Prix meets this year, the National jumps championship in Pune and now the Asian meet in Amman. Unless the Asian Grand Prix events are not counted, since women’s long jump was a non-GP event this year, Anju should get back into the rankings somewhere in the 30s. Normally one would expect a non-GP event to score at least equivalent to a national-level meet (other than National championships) with a placing score of 15 for the first place. — Special Correspondent
