Gopal Gandhi, Somnath greet Sainath
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has congratulated P. Sainath on winning the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award.
In a message sent from Kent, United Kingdom, Mr. Chatterjee said, “Mr. Sainath’s incisive writings are known for pricking the conscience of people in power, particularly those who are far removed from the reality on the ground and yet dare to make tall claims. He very much deserves the award for singularly fighting to bring poverty back on the national agenda through his writings based on most authentic and field-based research.”
He added, “The perspectives he adds to the contemporary discourse on socio-economic issues always establish an immediate link with the concerns of the common people of the country. I have no hesitation in saying that Mr. Sainath has enhanced the prestige of the award.”
PTI reports from Kolkata
West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi said the award for Mr. Sainath is a tribute to his perseverance and courage. “It is also a comment on those who have ignored or played down the challenges before India’s agricultural population, especially its Dalit section.”
