6 convicted for cheating
Staff Reporter
NEW DELHI: A court here has sentenced six persons, including two employees of a nationalised bank, to rigorous imprisonment after holding them guilty of cheating victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots of their compensation amounts.
Special Judge Vinod Goel sentenced Surinder Singh Zaidi, the then junior management officer with the State Bank of India (Ghazipur branch), to five-year rigorous imprisonment and also imposed a fine of Rs.55,000.
Another convict Hemchand Sharma, an accountant in the bank, was sentenced to three-and-a-half-year rigorous imprisonment and asked to pay a fine of Rs.10,000.
Ravinder Sharma and his sons — Ashwani, Praveen and Prithviraj — were also sentenced to five-year rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs.22,000, Rs.9,000, Rs.10,000 and Rs.8,000 respectively.
The court found the accused guilty of cheating, forgery under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act. The court observed that the accused had added insult to injury to the riot victims by cheating them of their compensation amount.
